About Us

Pearlicity is a small, single woman-owned business in North Carolina. As owner/designer,
I work directly with a small pearl farm in China. I design the pieces, hand select the pearls
and oversee all quality from the women in China that assemble the pieces.

I had the great fortune to be required to travel around the world in my 30-year career as
a scientist and engineer. Over the decades, I’ve seen most of the world become uniform
in the product and store brands available. You can find the same brands in any major city
in the world today. I think it is a great loss for those that love to shop. I’m grateful for the internet, so that I can continue to shop for items that you can’t find in any global brand
store.

I always loved to travel to Asia and especially China, because it remains a country where entrepreneurism is strong and you can find locally produced products with great quality
that are only sold locally.

I have taken the extra step (probably because of my engineering background) to select clasps for Pearlicity that not only look fabulous but are also easy for those with long manicured nails or older joints to put on easily. Our clasps are also nickel free – I have a metal allergy along with 20% of the population – so you can wear these pieces with confidence.

An oyster makes pearls on its own by secreting nacre, or mother of pearl, around an irritant that gets into its shell. Over the course of 3 to 15 years, the oysters deposit layer upon layer of nacre around the growing gems, generally producing more than two dozen pearls clustered on the inside of each shell.

Pearls are only produced by oysters in unpolluted, pristine water. Even slight levels of pollutants will prevent oysters from proper pearl production. Pearl farmers take care to maintain clean water habitats and take great care, nurturing their oysters for many years.

Pearls used in Pearlicity pieces are between 8 and 20 years in the making. No man-made material can match the luster, gleam, weight and warmth of pearls.

Pearls come in a wide range of colors, sizes and shapes. There are warm hues like yellow, orange, and pink, and cool hues like blue, green, and violet.

Pearlicity uses all of these in their designs. The most rare (and more expensive) are the pastel colors and the perfectly round pearls.
